Policeman Frank Panek was succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained four days earlier while questioning a suspicious person near the intersection of East Fifth Street and Town Avenue.
The subject produced a revolver and shot Policeman Panek. Despite being mortally wounded, Policeman Panek returned fire along with his partner, killing the subject.
Policeman Panek was transported to Georgia Street Receiving Hospital where he remained until succumbing to his wounds.
Policeman Panek was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII.
