Family, Friends & Fellow Officers Remember...

Dear Deputy Piquette, I was not sure what I was going to write on this page until this morning when we got the opportunity to met a very wonderful lady. That lady was your mother. After ten years she has remained a motivator to our class and I'm sure many other classes just like us. She showed us how much she cares and how dedicated she is to spread her sons legacy across many new law enforcement officers. We were lucky enough to be a part of the last official memorial run for you, that day was the most motivating day for many of us in class 415. I may not know you personally but I have been inspired by witnessing the impact you have made on so many people around you.

I met your mom at her salon in El Segundo about 3 weeks before I went to the academy, sometime in early May of 2016. Her and the El Segundo Officer who took me to meet her told me your story and how much it has affected so many people. They told me about her involvement and influence within the law enforcement community, about the memorial run in your honor, the shirts she had made, and so much more. She talked to me about the academy and what to expect. All the while, she looked at me with a real genuine concern in her eyes, and I had just barely met her. I didn't understand at the moment how someone who knew so little about me, and I her, could show so much care.

I met with your mother again today, on July 6, 2016. Two months have gone by but the lessons and experiences I have come to value since then take the average person years to appreciate. I now understand your mom's passion and good will towards all those that enter into a law enforcement career. It's a family, not by blood, not by marriage, but by strong bonds forged through certain values and ethics. I have made stronger ties now in the academy than the ones I've made with friends I've had since high school. I've felt through other officers that you have that as well; you have made those connections, created that family, and forged those bonds.

My class and I had the privilege to participate in the tenth and final memorial run on your honor. The amount of people that attended the run, the passion that was evident in their demeanor, and the things they had to say about you were amazing. You had reached out and touched all their lives in some way, shape, or form. I stood there in awe and disbelief that one man could bring together all these people, and that group was only a fraction of who really wanted to be there in your honor. To be a friend, a brother, a son, a mentor, a teacher, and an inspiration such as the one you are to so many is absolutely incredible. I know that if I can be even half the officer you have become, that I will have done right by my partners.

My name is Recruit Avila and I am currently a part of Class 415. This last week, our class had the honor of participating in the memorial run marking ten years since your passing. Today we met your mother and father. It was sobering.

Sir, I know that this is not the way you intended to leave an impression on the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and future generations. However, I would like you to know that even in your absence, you continue to have a profound presence and impact on all who knew or learn of the man you were.

As a class, your memorial run was a defining moment for us. That day we grew together in a way that only comes from legacies as your own. We held our heads a little higher, said our cadence a little louder, and pushed a little harder. I have no doubts that for some, that moment of running up your hill will be something that is carried with them throughout their entire career. I know that is the case for myself.

Talking about Deputy Piquette and showing how he is greatly appreciated by the whole department just shows the kind of family and support that LASD gives.
