Reflections for Police Officer Bryan Scott Hurst

Semper Fi, Marine! I know you are celebrating the Corps' birthday today, just as we are all remembering you down here. You are missed beyond words.

Bryan and I were not much more than rookies, and although we were not actually partners, were working a car together. We had returned to the substation, which was little more than a glorified closet, for dinner. As we were eating, the senior officer on the precinct (let's just call him Klisines)came in to use the restroom. He asked if we would watch his gunbelt as he did so. Bryan tells him, "Sure, no problem."

Officer Klisines removed his belt and left it on a table. Our gunbelts aren't like a normal belt-- the buckle stays on it, and a hook attaches to the back of the buckle. To remove it, we don't unbuckle, we unhook it. So, instead of deciding how tight to cinch it each time we put it on, the gunbelt stays the same length.

While Klisines was in the restroom, Bryan got up and moved the buckle, making it tighter. He then resumed eating. Out comes Klisines, and sure enough, he just automatically tried to put on his now too-tight gunbelt, just like any of us would have. It was hilarious to watch as Klisines struggled unsuccessfully to get it hooked.

I once left my hat in the substation, and although I was never able to prove it, I believe Bryan was the one that filled it with water and put it in the freezer. I'm not sure if Bryan figured it out, but when he later made the mistake of leaving his hat, another officer and I removed his hatbadge and ran Bryan's hat up the flag pole.

Semper Fi, Gump!

Thinking of you today. You would be amazed on how many people we ask now to remove their hats in the bank lobby for the protection of customers and employees and the customers yell at us!!! I want to scream at them and say hey bank robberies do happen and they don't always have a good ending. Thank you for being our hero and I am really sorry you left to early in life. I think of you often..

Dear Bryan,
This past Thursday, your beloved Basset Hound, Zoe, joined you in heaven. Marissa said she loved you best. She spent almost 5 years with me getting very spoiled and was very much loved. Freckles and I miss her so much!! Malia said it best. "Zoe is up in heaven playing with all the little bunnies and now God is her owner. God can take her for lots of walks." Thinking of you and feel comfort in knowing that Zoe is with you. Love, Sherri

Bryan-
Thinking of you! It seems so lonely on your page. It is so far and few between entries anymore. Lots of snow and cold. Hope it is warm and sunny where you are! Just thought I would say I was thinking of you - my hero!
