To the family, friends and co-workers my prayers are with you. There is nothing anyone can say to help you, I wish there was. The one thing that help me was knowing the fact that Clint loved being a police officer and would not have traded places with anyone, except maybe another officer. And Clint died loving what he did, and I know he is in heaven watching over all of us, just as Darryl will watch over all of you.

I check this website daily, for our son recently lost his partner on a code call. We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

God bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great nation.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Tonight, October 4, 2004 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Trooper Darryl L. Haywood who died in the line of duty just two days ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Trooper Haywood's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

My heart goes out to you in this time of deep sorrow. I know that words do little to ease the pain of the loss of your love one. I hope that you find comfort in god arms and the wonderful memories that you shared together. No one knows better than a wife of a LEO the fear of kissing him good bye for work and not knowing if he will return for dinner but we do it with a smile because it is a part of him and without it he is not complete. It has taken a several days to sift through the emotions of losing a fellow officer/friend. First my emotion was complete shock "How can he be gone,I never got to say good bye?". We tend to leave fellow officers thinking we will see eachother again soon working an accident, handling calls or just talking about life in general.
Second emotion was anger for the persons responsible for the wreckless driving on the interstate, that ultimately resulted in Trooper Haywood's tragic death.
I am now back to sorrow for Trooper Haywoods family and for his fellow Troopers. I had the pleasure of working with Trooper Haywood and he is everything described by others and more.
There is no other profession that mourns the loss of a brother or sister in law enforcement the way we do, and there is reason for that. We are truely a family and losing one of our own, no matter the department is particularly difficult.
Always remember to seize the day, never have regrets. If you love someone-tell them. Stay close to family and friends for today may be your last. Stay safe out there and you'll be missed Trooper Haywood.
