Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Robert Michael Tanner, Jr.
Tanner here we are again, another year gone by, this is one of the hardest days of the year for me every year. Its been 12 years since you were taken away from us way too soon, yet still, this day brings back a flood of emotions. The grieving process is a process that we all go through when we lose someone dear to us, but I can tell you from experience these past 12 years that our emotions do not fade or disappear. I feel if it was 80 years the emotions would still be there. Loving you and missing you never goes away. We carry on in this life with our day to day activities which must be done yet, all the while, never forgetting you. The memory of you and your service to our community is reflected every time a car goes by with your number 17 decal displayed on the window. Every time I see that number, on TV, on a car or anywhere, I think of you and miss you all over again. You were loved, you are loved and you will always be loved. By the way, we have had some really frigid temps here in Z-ville these past couple days, but every time I see your picture with your smile it warms my heart. Love you brother.

Tanner,
I remember that night like it was yesterday. The deputies who searched the woods couldn't see him in the dark, but they heard him yell at them to stop. My husband was one of them, and he swears to this day that it was your voice that yelled from the heavens. You have been with him many times since...like a guardian angel. Thank you.

Here we are another year gone by without you with us. In just two days it will be 11 years since you were taken from us that dreadful night. 11 years without you bright smile and kind words, 11 years without you here to protect us. I remember a time long ago when we were very young, and you were strong and acted as a protector at that time, and I always felt safe around you, then when you became a deputy sheriff I knew you were doing what you were suppose to do, even though I always worried about you. I know that you may not be here to protect us in person but that you watch over us even still everyday. This year you would have been 51 years old, gee that sounds old, but it still would have been nice to say Happy Birthday to you just one more time. I know you already know this but I am going to say it again and again until we meet again - I love you and miss you and you will never be forgotten. Your service was not in vain. Your time here on earth may have been short but the impact you made on everyone you came in contact with will last forever. Love you my brother.

Robert, I never met you in person but I had the honor of meeting your sister. She is loving, very kind and considerate.(rarely found these days)
Her heart is on her sleeve. I can't help but to believe you both share similar characters: which in my book is a big thumbs up! Your memory is very much alive in how ofter she speaks about you. You truly was taken way too soon.

While reading some of the reflections, I noticed one of them saying Happy Birthday. Then noticed the date. Happy Birthday Deputy Tanner. Keep close watch on us on the streets and inside of the fences.

Forgive me for missing the anniversary of your E.O.W., but I felt as though I could not continue to read about so many tragedies. I now realize the visit each day to leave a word of encouragement and hope to the loved ones of others, helps me to remember that I am not alone with my pain and heartbreak. So may I say to your friends and loved ones that my thoughts and prayers are with them now and always. Continue to keep watch over them and those still out on patrol and may they know you will never be forgotten.

I took your father and mother in law out the other night for a beer. We had a wonderful visit. They told me a funny story about S-71 stopping by their house. I realized how much they love and care for all of us. Anyone wearing a badge is family to them. Texted your wife, told her we were all thinking about her.
