Reflections for Police Officer Cecil Frank Sledge
Once again, I am honored to have sent a "No parole" letter, so your cowardly killer remains locked up
and denied the pleasure of living in a world that you made safe for all of us.
Det. Billy Russo (Ret)
Nassau County Police Department, New York.

After reading most of these messages and learning what a special person Cecil was, my heart was shattered. I truly hope his killer remains in prison until his last breath. I love how his wife kept his memory alive after all these years. As Cecil was a hero, so is his wife.

In 1967, I met Sergeant Sledge in the Army's 72nd Combat Engineer Company--attached to the 197th Infantry Brigade in Ft. Benning, GA. It was my 1st assignment post OCS as 2nd platoon leader. I believe he was a 1st platoon sergeant. As well as with other members, I was lucky have occasion to coordinate with him for training "the Infantry" in demolitions and also preparing the 72nd Company for many anticipated & actual civil disturbances--especially expected, but thankfully not needed, for Atlanta--Martin Luther King's funeral service. He left a well-liked impression. I knew Sgt. Sledge was from the South. From Brooklyn, I never knew where he was reassigned after I transferred to VN. Unexpected, it was many years after my return to Brooklyn that I read about his untimely, tragic death & how coincidently close we resided. Rest In Peace....Always in Memory.

Tragically another officer has been killed in the line of duty. May you and all of the men and women in blue who went before him, be there to welcome him with loving arms. Left behind a young widow and year old son. May he rest in eternal peace. Strength and love to the Diller Family and Friends

My Dad, may he rest in peace, a NYC P.O during the 60s thru the 80s in the 63 pct. In Brooklyn, often spoke to my mom, brothers and sister about Hero P.O. Cecil Sledge. Officer Sledge’s murder affected him greatly and thru him us. I was shocked to find out that Officer Sledge’s murderer could be granted parole. Why? Rest in Peace P.O.Sledge. Prayers for your family, friends and colleagues.

When I researched your line of duty passing a couple of years ago to try to contribute a nice picture of you in uniform to the website, I found a nice picture of you smiling while getting a community award from police commissioner Michael Codd at the time. I have to find that picture again, it would be nice to contribute it. It was in the Canarsie Courier Newspaper at the Time of your passing in the line of duty.
