Dear Parole Board Members:

I respectfully ask that you DO NOT grant parole to Sheldon Beckham, inmate #1138485. The inmate's criminal history and subsequent murder of St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Police Officer David Aaron Haynes should preclude any parole consideration.

On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, inmate #1138485 was found burglarizing a home on Bancroft. The resident shared a description of inmate #1138485 and his vehicle. Police Officer David Haynes spotted the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, but inmate #1138485 sped away. During the pursuit, a vehicle struck Officer David Haynes' police cruiser, sending it into a spin and colliding with an SUV. By the time Officer David Haynes was pried from his patrol vehicle and arrived at the hospital, he was pronounced deceased.

Inmate #1138485 was arrested 12 hours after Police Officer David Haynes died. He was on probation when he was apprehended. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, felony murder, burglary, possession of a controlled substance (felony), and resisting a lawful stop by flight with serious physical injury/death. Inmate #1138485 was sentenced to 20 years.

Officer Haynes was only 27 years old. But in those short years, he was a dedicated St. Louis Police Officer who had honorably served with the United States Marine Corps, deploying to Afghanistan and Iraq. Officer Haynes was a devoted son, brother, uncle, grandson, and cousin. Most importantly, David Haynes was a newlywed who was unable to celebrate his first wedding anniversary.

Parole is a privilege and not a right. Inmate #1138485 was on probation, had served time for robbery in 2007, and was still robbing homes in 2010. His flight from Police Officer David Haynes led to his death. The severity of his crime demands that he spend every day of his sentence in prison. As a citizen concerned about public safety, I ask that you DENY PAROLE to inmate #1138485.
