I did not know Ronnie before the night of his accident. I had the very unpleasant experience of investigating his crash. I can still see the scene. That night was by far the worst shift of my career. We can't comprehend why these things happen to good people like Ronnie, but we can keep his memory alive on this site. My prayers continue to go out to his family, friends and law enforcement brothers and sisters. Rest in peace Ronnie.

Deputy Ronnie Eugene Smith was my little 6ft 10 inch brother. There isn't a day that go by I dont talk or miss him. You see I talk to him and I get my answer from him because, I know the answer it's only the truth. I love you and I know I will see again . God put you in my life for almost 50 years and I am so grateful yo have you in my DNA for life. I cry a lot when I think of you for not being around you more but our jobs kept us in different parts of the world. I love you little brother and your kids and wife are fine . May God Bless you and hold you in his arms till we meet again. I live you your big brother Neal B Smith Jr

I pray that everyone can find peace in knowing that we will see this officer as well as many others again in Paradise soon. Until then, please accept my condolences.

Ronnie, I remember watching you climb out of that Crown Vic and wondering " how does he get in there?" Its not the same not seeing you pull up to the BP station and laugh at having to do "inventory" on your car. The day we got the phone call was a day we didn't want to see coming. I ride by there every once in a while. All I do is nod my head, smile, and say thank you for your service and most importantly, being a friend. We'll hang out at a BP station again one day. Until we meet again my friend

I attended basic Mandate with Ronnie. He was such a pleasant guy to be around. He just wanted to serve and help others. He had retired from European professional basketball.

You came to my aid about four years ago when a tire blew on my pickup on I 75. It was almost dark and you were in behind me with lights flashing before I even got out of my truck. Your main concern was my safety. I'm grateful you were there for me and will never forget you. My comment to you at the time was "I bet
no man ever looked down on you" was meant in jest. It is absolutely true today. You are a man above men!

Hey Buddy, Not a day goes by that I dont think of you. I miss you so much. I just want to take the time to tell the world how great of a man you truely were: A great man is always ready to be the servant of society. It takes a great man to not only be a good listener, but a good friend. A great man is made up of qualities that meets or makes perfect standards. Ronnie was a great man. Ronnie was blessed with many spiritual gifts, his character, and other qualities, deserves to be called great and who as a result earns the power to influence others. He always knew what to say to brightens someones day. We had many laughs together. He loved his wife & kids more than anything. Ronnie had a good head and a good heart, which were always a powerful combination. He knew exactly how to use them both in a way that always led to the cause of someone elses smile or comfort. I learned alot from this man. How to be a friend. How to be myself. He always told me to believe in myself and have faith in my abilities. A great man is one who leaves others at loss after he is gone. If he can live on after he is gone then he must have been a great man. What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us. I can only hope that one day my character shines half as bright as yours did. I love & miss ya buddy! #RIP643
