Extra Policeman Harry Hockenberry was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a subject for brandishing a weapon near Trinity Memorial Church, at Poplar Avenue.
Policeman Hockenberry had stopped to speak to his brother when a foreigner approached and tried to join the conversation. Policeman Hockenberry asked the man to move on, at which time the man displayed a revolver.
Policeman Hockenberry, aided by his brother and another citizen, chased the man approximately three blocks before he was fatally shot. The man was then subdued by the citizen and taken into custody by responding officers.
The suspect, who claimed self defense, was tried and acquitted.
Policeman Hockenberry was survived by his brother.
